My specialty and passion is working with the small children. Water Babies starts with age six months. It is my belief that at six months a child can easily hold their head erect and also the child is able to understand and respond to verbal direction. By age 24 to 30 months the child is physically able to move on and start beginning swimming. I have vast education and experience in working with this age level. I have over 25 years of time in the pool with the infants. I also have concentrated on special CPR skills for the smaller children. Safety and the prevention of drowning is ever important for all ages but especially for the toddlers. I do not believe that the term “drown proof” is possible but extreme safety and the emphasis of drowning prevention is feasible.
It all starts with being comfortable in the water, knowing its limits, and respecting the elements. Children learn from two keys; repetition and consistency. Doing the same thing over and over is how they learn. I use songs and music, lots of games and fun. My classes are a happy place to learn to swim. The ratio for Water Babies is one child to two adults (one parent and one teacher). The adults are in the pool with the child during the entire class. The parent holds and works with the child, the teacher simple guides and directs. I do not promise to teach the water baby to "SWIM", but to be comfortable and unafraid in the water. Strokes and swimming on their own will come later.
